Glassine Paper: Translucent Bags and Rolls, Printed to Order

Glassine is the thin, slick, see-through paper that cookie shops and candy makers reach for when the product should show. We print it as flat bags or as rolls, in one or two spot colors.

Written quote in one business day, free design proof. Minimum order 1,000 sheets or 1 roll.

What is glassine paper?

Glassine is paper pressed between hot steel rollers until the fibers lie flat and dense. There is no wax and no coating. The smoothness itself slows grease, and the tight sheet lets light through.

Held flat it looks milky white. Laid over a cookie or a chocolate it turns almost clear, so the customer sees the product and the print at the same time.

It runs light, about 25 to 30 lb, and it rustles. That sound and the slight shine are why it reads as premium on a bakery counter.

Bags or rolls: which glassine format fits the job?

The two formats in this range are the same paper in two shapes. The table matches each to the work it does best.

Pick bags if the item is sold one at a time and the customer carries it away. Pick rolls if the paper goes between layers, inside a box or around a bar on a packing bench. Printed glassine bags are where most bakeries start.

How does glassine behave with grease, heat and moisture?

Butter is the usual worry. A shortbread left in a glassine bag until morning leaves a faint shadow on the paper but no wet patch. The dense sheet holds the fat near the surface.

Chocolate and caramel release cleanly from it, which is why candy makers use it as a twist wrap and a box interleaf. Coffee oils behave the same way on a roll liner.

Heat is not a problem in typical oven-safe grades, which take up to 400°F. Moisture is. Glassine is not a moisture barrier, so a damp cake or a cut cheese needs paraffin paper, not glassine, for anything longer than a day.

What size bag or roll do I need?

Measure the item and add room for the flap. A flat bag should take the product with half an inch to spare on each side and an inch of flap to fold over.

  • 3.5 × 5.5 in: a single macaron pair, a tea bag, a business-card-size chocolate
  • 4.75 × 6.75 in: two cookies, a brownie, a small bag of candy
  • 5.5 × 7.5 in: a large cookie, a scone, a pastry sleeve
  • 7.5 × 10 in: a croissant, a slice of loaf cake, a quarter pound of candy
  • Rolls at 12 in and 15 in for counter dispensers; 18 in and 24 in for box lining and bars

A longer glassine paper roll at 1,000 ft suits a packing bench that lines boxes all day; the 500 ft rolls fit a counter dispenser.

How does printing work on glassine?

Glassine takes ink on its slick face, but it is translucent, so the print shows faintly from the back as well. We keep artwork to one or two spot colors and place it where the product will not fight it.

On a bag, the logo sits on the front panel below the flap. On a roll, a loose repeat at about 4 in spacing means the mark lands somewhere on every tear.

Dark inks read best. A pale pastel on glassine almost vanishes once a brown cookie is behind it. Our printing on greaseproof paper guide shows how a proof mocks this up.

Mistakes to avoid with glassine

Using a glassine bag for a warm cookie straight off the tray. Steam condenses on the inside, the paper goes limp and the cookie softens. Cool it first.

Choosing the bag by cookie width alone. The flap needs an inch, and a thick cookie needs a touch of width for the fold to lie flat.

Ordering a four-color design. Glassine is a one or two color paper; more than that looks heavy on a sheet this thin.

How do I order glassine bags or rolls?

  1. Tell us the item, its size and roughly how many bags or feet you use each month.
  2. You get a written quote within one business day with the bag size or roll width we would pick.
  3. Send a logo and we lay out a free design proof showing the print on a bag face or across a roll repeat.
  4. Change the proof until it is right. Nothing prints before you approve it.
  5. Bags are printed and made in 4 to 6 business days. Delivery to US addresses is free and tracked, 2 to 3 business days.

The minimum is 1,000 bags or one roll. Samples of the paper weight can be asked for on the quote request page.

10 questions

Should a cookie shop that packs by hand use glassine bags or a roll?

Bags. A flat bag with a flap is filled and folded in seconds at the counter.

Does glassine stay translucent after holding a buttery pastry for a day?

Mostly. A faint grease shadow can show where the pastry touched, but the paper does not go wet or wrinkled.

Will glassine show grease marks from chocolate or caramel?

Very little. Chocolate and caramel set and release from the slick face, so twist wraps and box interleaves come away clean.

Can glassine bags hold whole coffee beans without the oil marking the paper?

For a day or two, yes. Oily dark roasts will shadow the bag over a week, so use a printed glassine liner inside a heavier outer bag for retail shelf life.

Which glassine format suits interleaving sliced cheese or deli meat?

Rolls, torn to size or cut to sheets. Slices lift away cleanly and the paper stays dry to handle.

Is glassine strong enough to wrap a whole loaf of bread?

A roll at 18 in wraps a small loaf, but glassine is thin and tears at the corners of a heavy one.

Can glassine rolls go in a counter dispenser with a tear bar?

Yes. The 12 in and 15 in widths fit a standard bar and tear straight.

Why does white glassine look blue-gray in product photos?

It is translucent, so the surface it sits on shows through. On a blue bench it reads blue; over a cookie it reads brown.

Can I print on the flap or gusset of a glassine bag?

The flap, yes, as part of the same plate. Our glassine bags are flat without a gusset, so artwork goes on the front panel and the flap face only.

Is glassine suitable for a hot item straight from the fryer?

No. The paper handles oven heat, but a fried item releases steam that condenses on glassine and softens the crust.
