Why does soap need greaseproof paper?
A cured cold-process bar still carries free oils and glycerin. Wrap it in ordinary paper and a dark patch appears at the contact points within a week. Greaseproof stock holds those oils at the surface, so the wrap stays clean on a market table.
Humidity is the other problem. Glycerin pulls water from the air and the bar sweats. A loose paper wrap lets it breathe, which is why makers prefer paper over film for a bar that is still curing on the shelf.
Both papers in this range are a 30 to 40 lb kraft or white greaseproof sheet. They fold crisp, hold a crease and take a one-color print cleanly.
Full wrap or band: which one for your bar?
The choice is about what you want the customer to see and touch.
| Paper | Covers | Best for | Print area | Typical pick |
|---|
| Custom soap wrapping paper | The whole bar, folded and tucked | Smooth bars, gift sets, mail-order, bars with a plain top | Top face and two long sides | 8 × 8 in |
|---|
| Printed soap bands | A strip around the middle | Bars with a decorated top, swirls, dried petals, embossed stamps | Front face plus a short return | 2 × 9 in |
|---|
Most makers who pour a swirl or a textured top use a band so the work shows. Makers who ship bars or sell in gift boxes go with the full wrap for a cleaner, more protected bar. Our guide to wrapping soap in paper walks through both folds.
How does a soap wrap fold?
A full wrap folds like a gift parcel. The sheet is cut square so the ends meet neatly, and the kraft stock holds every crease without springing open.
- Lay the bar face down in the center of the sheet, logo side of the sheet underneath.
- Bring the two long edges over the back and overlap them by about an inch.
- Fold each open end into two triangles, then fold the flap up and under.
- Flip the bar. The logo now sits square on the top face with no seam showing.
- Hold the back seam with a small sticker or a dab of glue stick; nothing else is needed.
An 8 × 8 in sheet handles a 3.5 × 2.5 × 1 in bar with enough paper for the end folds. A 10 × 10 in sheet suits a tall or chunky bar, and 12 × 12 in wraps a two-bar set.
How wide should a soap band be?
A band should cover about half the height of the bar and go all the way around with an inch of overlap to glue or tuck.
- 1.5 × 8 in: a slim band for a sample bar or a travel size, one line of type
- 2 × 9 in: the usual pick for a 3.5 oz bar, room for a name and scent
- 2.5 × 10 in: a tall bar, or when the ingredient list goes on the back
- 3 × 11 in: a chunky 5 oz bar, or a band that doubles as the full label
Band length is the bar's girth plus an inch. Measure around the middle of a cured bar, not a fresh one, because bars shrink a little as they cure. The printed soap bands page lists all four widths.
How does printing work on soap paper?
Kraft is the house stock for soap. A single dark ink, a deep green, a charcoal or a brown, reads as handmade without looking cheap. White stock suits a brand that uses pastel colors or a fine serif.
Bands carry small type: scent, weight, an ingredient list, a batch date. Keep that text at 7 pt or larger on kraft and leave the back of the band for the list so the front stays clean.
Soy and water-based inks are matched to Pantone solid-coated references. On a custom soap wrapping sheet the logo goes in the center so it lands on the top face after the fold.
Mistakes to avoid with soap wraps and bands
Wrapping a bar that has not finished curing. It sweats under the paper and the wrap goes soft at the base.
Ordering a band to the length of a fresh bar. Cured bars are narrower, so the band ends up loose and slides off.
Using a glossy or coated paper. Soap oils mark it, and it will not hold a crease at the end folds.
